Post-Op General Instructions

Anesthesia and medications for sedation will be acting in your body for at least 24 hours. You may not remember some things about your surgery; including important instructions and explanations you may have been given. This is not unusual. It is important for you to be aware of the following:

  1. During the first 24 hours, do not drive a car or operate machinery or power tools.

  2. Do not take tranquilizers or sleeping pills unless specifically ordered by your physician.

  3. Do not drink any alcohol.

  4. Do not sign any legal documents.

  5. Do not assume responsibility in caring for others until you are fully recovered.

  6. Since you may feel dizzy or light-headed from anesthesia, and for your own safety, a responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

  7. Take your pain medicine as directed. Avoid driving and the use of alcohol while taking narcotic pain medications.

CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IF YOU HAVE:

  • Pain that is unrelieved by medication.

  • Excessive bleeding (some bleeding is normal).

  • Fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.4 Centigrade) or fever with chills.

  • Numbness or tingling in the affected extremity (unless a block was used).

  • A cast and any part of it breaks allowing the injured part to move excessively.

  • Shortness of breath.

  • Questions about your surgery.
